Programme Overview | ||||||||||||||
Biotechnology is seen as the technology that would "heal, feed and fuel" the world. Acknowledging the vast amounts of money poured into this area globally, the Malaysian government has identified Biotechnology to be one of the foci for Malaysia's growth when it launched the National Biotech Policy on April 28, 2005. Since then, various new investments and traditional companies have invested in biotechnology-related products or turned to biotechnology to improve their products and to facilitate the manufacturing process to be cleaner and more cost effective. This has created an ever-increasing job market for trained biotechnologists. To ensure Malaysia's participation in this global marketplace, she needs world class people to lead world class companies. Hence, it is essential that Malaysia nurtures her potentials to be the best biotech brains in research and product development. This coursework-based MSc (Biotechnology with Management) aims to produce postgraduates with expertise in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the specialized areas in Biotechnology, with the relevant skills for independent research, and which involves them learning to conceptualize current economics, ethical, legal and social issues related to biotechnology to generate, develop and communicate creative solutions scientifically. Furthermore, these programmes also develop students' managerial and leadership skills, to enable them to apply their scientific knowledge successfully and training them to be bioentrepreneurs / technopreneurs of the next generation with the ability to translate research outcomes into future business opportunities. Teaching and Learning Features | ||||||||||||||
This programme aims at providing students an interesting and stimulating learning experience via various teaching-learning techniques and assessment strategies. Besides theoretical knowledge, it is important for Master students to demonstrate an ability to operate and maintain scientific equipment, to have good practical skills to conduct basic guided research and laboratory work and also to analyze, synthesize and integrate knowledge and information. Needing to conduct extensive relevant laboratory practicals in the subjects as well as to undertake an intensive research project, our Master's students will be required to design and conduct research/survey in the area of Biotechnology to propose a way to bring the final product into the market. This involves them writing a business proposal at the end of the project, which includes budgeting, expenditure estimations, capital investments, profits and losses, and sales and market demands. Consequently, they get to understand their research objectives, the timeline and time management of their studies, and major project milestones. Successful completion of the research project is the key factor in accomplishing this degree. Assessment is also an integral part of their learning process. Depending on their subjects, some students would have a formal summative assessment, while most of them would be assessed continuously throughout the course. This continuous assessment in the form of assignments would require them to be self-directed to learn through oral presentations, written reports, case studies, critical analysis on published scientific data, mini projects (individual or team), seminars and class discussions. Through various learning instructional media and technologies, students get to learn to identify to take advantage of the unique opportunities and challenges inherent in the assignments that broaden their knowledge while inculcating life-long learning. Amongst the most applicable techniques helping students to envision real-world Biotechnology challenges to apply theories learnt throughout their studies are critical analysis of case studies and data interpretation exercises. In addition, students also acquire the relevant communication, leadership and team-work skills necessary to pursue their career. |
